A Royal Decree was issued on Sunday appointing members of the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) under a law governing the body enacted in line with a provision added to the Constitution last year.

Abdul Ilah Khatib was named president of the board of commissioners, while Riyadh Shakaa, Atef Btoush, Mohammad Ali Alawneh and Eid Jweied were named board members.

Another Royal Decree was issued on Sunday accepting the resignation of Khatib from the Senate as of May 6, 2011.

In a letter addressed to Khatib, His Majesty King Abdullah stressed that the formation of the commission is an essential step in preparation for fair and transparent parliamentary elections.

His Majesty told Khatib that the Kingdom relies on the IEC “to usher in a new era in Jordan’s political history, an era characterised by balance between the branches of government and steady improvement in the performance of Parliament and political parties. It should be an era that leads us to a reinvigorated political life and allows us to continue the process of building and achievement in a way that meets the aspirations of our dear people and brings the best to our dear homeland”.
