King's Activities at G-8 Summit

His Majesty King Abdullah II said commitment by member states of the G-8 to reach a just and comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian issue and to establish stability in Iraq forms a key factor to succeed reform plans in the Middle East.

During his meeting with G-8 leaders in their summit currently held in Sea Island, Georgia U.S., King Abdullah affirmed Jordan's appreciation to these states' understanding that reforms should be homegrown and that uniqueness of peoples in the region should be respected.

The Arabs agree on the importance of reform and modernization in political, social and economic spheres, said King Abdullah noting the reform document approved by Arab leaders during the Tunis Arab summit.

Jordan has accomplished wide strides in political, economic and social reform, King Abdullah said.

"Our leading experiment in developing and modernizing education and in administrative and judicial reform assert Jordan's commitment to diligently pursue efforts to realize a better future," King Abdullah said.

The King welcomed the support Jordan receives from its partners in the United States, Europe and Japan which helps in succeeding its plans to achieve sustainable economic development.

Jordan would put forward the success it has attained in educational reform as a model of reform initiatives that starts from within and is backed up by international partners, the King said.

King Abdullah stressed the necessity for a clear commitment by the group to increase technical and financial support to achieve objectives of reform and modernization in the region. Middle East countries should be give the chance to choose reform plans that best suit them, said the King, who called for adopting a new Marshal plan for development and progress in the Middle East.

King Abdullah welcomed the ongoing dialogue between members of the group and the countries in the region which pave the ground for a longstanding relations based on understanding, partnership and sustainable development.

The success of the international initiatives to support homegrown reforms is basically linked with achieving sustainable development, improving incomes and offering jobs to the youth, who form majority of the population in the region.

Leaders of the group highly appreciated Jordan's stand on reform and modernization in the region and lauded steps taken by the Kingdom in the field of political, economic and social reform. They also valued the King's vision that reforms should start from within and agreed on the necessity to settle conflicts in the Middle East at the top of which is the Arab Israeli conflict.
