His Majesty King Abdullah said Arab, American and Israeli peace activists have an important role to play in advancing the peace process, and must redouble their efforts in order to exploit the conditions now available to build peace and security in the region.
He said their activism could help Israelis and Palestinians to return to the negotiating table to resolve the conflict between them.
During a meeting today with the Israel Policy Forum, an organization grouping Jewish American peace activists, King Abdullah said that the peace camp must make its voice heard and build public pressure for the advancement of the peace process. The Israel Policy Forum is a proponent of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and advocates peace negotiations that would lead to such an outcome.
The King said during the meeting that the Arab Peace Initiative reflects the Arab states' desire for peace with Israel, and would allow for the normalization of relations between Israel and all Arab states. He added that he hopes Israel will respond to the initiative positively.
King Abdullah's meeting with the Israel Policy Forum was one in a series of meetings he has held with Jordanian, Palestinian and Israeli peace groups to encourage their involvement in peace efforts.
The King said that setting and adhering to a timeline for diplomacy is paramount to the success of the peace process.
Members of the Israel Policy Forum who attended the meeting expressed their appreciation for King Abdullah's efforts to revive the peace process and his vision for a new phase in the region, dominated by security, stability and coexistence.
The Israel Policy Forum has endorsed the Arab Peace Initiative and views it as an unprecedented opportunity to realize a comprehensive solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. It has said that the principles articulated in the initiative constitute a basis for negotiations.
