His Majesty King Abdullah and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday held talks on bilateral ties and regional developments.
In remarks to the press following the meeting, the King described his discussion with Aliyev as important and an opportunity to build on the existing solid political ties between the two countries, which he said should translate into strong ties between the Jordanian and the Azeri peoples.
The King also underlined the need for bolstering economic relations and increasing trade between the two countries. The economic aspect of bilateral cooperation will receive exceptional attention, he said during the press conference.
King Abdullah, who invited President Aliyev to visit Jordan in the near future, said the country would be coordinating with the Azeri government and embassy in Amman to turn the outcome of his two-day visit to Baku into tangible results on the ground.
For his part, Aliyev described ties with Jordan as very strong, stressing that both countries see eye-to-eye on various regional issues and have an identical stand regarding these issues in international organizations.
Focus will be placed in the coming years on the economic and trade fields, the president said, announcing that a high-ranking trade delegation will be visiting Jordan for the first time to enhance ties. He acknowledged that commercial cooperation between the two sides is below expectations.
Aliyev hoped the newly opened Azeri embassy in Amman would succeed in its mission and open new opportunities for cooperation.
On the sidelines of the visit, the two countries signed an agreement under which they agreed to respect international commitments towards the UN and the WTO and to improve economic cooperation, trade exchange and investments.
The deal also provides for coordination at the political level and in the fields of science and technology, education, tourism, health, and pharmaceuticals.
During the King's trip, he also visited the Haidar Aliev Foundation, where officials briefed him on the charity work and educational programmes the organization is implementing.
He also visited the Martyrs Monument, which is dedicated to Azeris who fought and died for independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991.
He also visited the tomb of the late president Haidar Aliyev, the founder of modern Azerbaijan.
