His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday stressed that the local community and civil societies in Maan will play a significant role in implementing the Maan Economic Development Zone (MEDZ).

During a meeting with academicians, officials and community leaders from Maan, the King urged them to present proposals and ideas that reflect the needs of Maan residents to be included in plans pertaining to the zone.

MEDZ was launched by King Abdullah on September 9 with a view to create jobs and alleviate poverty in the impoverished governorate.

King Abdullah told the area's representatives that MEDZ is meant to improve the economic situation and the living standards of residents of all of Maan Governorate's districts such as Shobak, Petra and Southern Badia.

The zone, His Majesty said, would ensure a diversified and integrated economy in Maan reflecting the industrial, agricultural and tourism potential it boasts.

The King said he will follow up, during the coming stage, on plans to develop Shobak and Petra so that these areas can retain their residents and skilled workforce.

The representatives shared with the King their ideas and visions on economic development in Maan, stressing the importance of economic integration between the governorate's districts, especially in the fields of tourism and agriculture.
