His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday stressed the urgency to achieve Middle East peace to ensure stability and safety for the region and its people.

In a letter sent to Abdou Salam Diallo, chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the King said the region is going through unprecedented transformations, which make the achievement of a comprehensive and just peace all the more urgent.

King Abdullah  warned that the failure to achieve peace will jeopardise the entire region, plunging it into a dark tunnel with no end in sight.

His Majesty noted that the committee has succeeded through the past decades to keep the Palestinian issue on top of the international agenda and to mobilise international support for the Palestinian people and their rights, in terms of denouncing Israel’s settlement policies, excavations under Al Aqsa Mosque and continued attempts to Judaise the Palestinian territories, and mainly East Jerusalem.

Arab countries have unanimously called for a just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution, the King said in reference to the Arab Peace Initiative, stressing that such an overture necessitates a true partnership among all parties involved in peacemaking efforts.

His Majesty  said the partners should push for restarting negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis to achieve an agreement that addresses all final status issues.

The King reiterated that the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent, sovereign and viable Palestinian state on the basis of the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital, is the sole means to end long decades of Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
