King, Saudi monarch discuss bilateral ties, regional issues

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday held talks with King Abdullah Ben Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia on bilateral ties and developments in the region.

At their meeting in Mecca, the two leaders stressed their keenness to take further steps to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields.

During an iftar banquet the Saudi leader held in honour of His Majesty and the accompanying delegation, the King voiced his appreciation for Saudi Arabia's support and services offered to pilgrims.

Talks covered the situation in the Palestinian territories. The two leaders voiced concern over the difficult living conditions the Palestinians are going through, especially in the Gaza Strip.

They stressed the need to intensify Arab and international efforts to ensure continued economic and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians to ease their suffering.

King Abdullah, who arrived in Jeddah earlier Sunday, and the Saudi leader also emphasized their support for the Palestinian stand calling for the inclusion of final status issues on the agenda of an upcoming US-proposed international Mideast conference.

They described the meeting as an important opportunity to realize the aspirations of the Palestinians in building their independent state.

The two leaders said it was important that the meeting, expected in November, yields tangible results.

Talks between the two leaders also covered the situation in Iraq and means to support its security and stability.

Also, His Majesty performed the umra (lesser pilgrimage) and joined the Saudi leader in performing maghreb prayers in Mecca holy shrine.

Later in the evening, His Majesty visited the tomb of Prophet Mohammad in Medina. He performed taraweeh prayers at the Prophet's Mosque in the holy city.
