His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday issued a Royal Decree rejecting a Parliament decision to annul the temporary Civil Retirement Law No. 10 for the Year 2010, which cancelled pensions for lawmakers.
King Abdullah sent a letter to Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour tasking the government with preparing a comprehensive study of the civil retirement system that would be the basis of a new law governing the pension system for the three branches of the government. It is also expected to address the distortions and confusions that have marred the existing law as a result of frequent amendments over the past decades, which also led to differences in interpretation and implementation that could be deemed a breach of the principles of justice and equality.
His Majesty said in the letter that the envisioned law should guarantee that no party would take advantage of the legislation to gain unjust financial and pension-related benefits.
