His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday said Jordan backs efforts to enhance Palestinian unity, restore Palestinian rights and establish an independent Palestinian state.

“There is a need to bridge the gap, because the continuation of the Palestinian divide will prolong the suffering of the Palestinian people and hinder progress in the peace process,” King Abdullah told Mohammad Saqr, the speaker of the Arab League interim parliament.

Saqr briefed the King at a Royal Court meeting on his efforts to launch a dialogue between Fateh and Hamas following the Islamists' takeover of Gaza.
