Jordan is focusing on achieving political reform in parallel with economic reforms to support the Kingdom’s middle class, His Majesty King Abdullah said on Wednesday.

King Abdullah briefed visiting US senators on the country’s drive to achieve reform and discussed the latest developments related to Middle East peace and the regional situation.

His Majesty noted that the difficult economic conditions were the main driving force that triggered the popular movements in the Arab world.

The delegation comprised senators Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), who chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriations, John Kerry (D-Massachusetts), who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Thad Cochran (R-Mississippi) and Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland).

During the meeting, King Abdullah reviewed Jordanian-US relations and means to foster them, in the political and economic fields, in particular.

The King also voiced appreciation for US assistance and support for development projects in Jordan.

King Abdullah also highlighted efforts to achieve comprehensive reform in the Kingdom and the milestones that have been achieved as part of the reform process. The King cited the constitutional amendments and the draft law for the independent election commission as some of the steps taken towards political reform.

His Majesty also pointed out that the government is drafting a new elections law, in cooperation with the legislative authority, to conduct parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

On Middle East peace, the King highlighted Jordan’s recent efforts to bring Palestinians and Israelis back to the negotiation table.

The senators commended the King’s position in support of Middle East peace, stressing that Jordan’s stability and security is important for the region.

They also expressed US commitment to fostering relations with Jordan and provide assistance, especially to support the economy.

The King and the visiting delegation reviewed political developments in the Arab world and their impact on the region as a whole. They also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern. Despite the challenges facing the region, the King expressed optimism for the future.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, His Majesty's Office Director Imad Fakhoury, His Majesty’s Adviser for Media Affairs Amjad Adaileh and U.S Ambassador to Jordan Stuart Jones were present at the meeting.
