His Majesty King Abdullah and US special envoy for the Mideast peace process Martin Indyk on Sunday discussed efforts to achieve peace in the region.

Indyk, who is currently in Amman as part of a regional tour, briefed King Abdullah on efforts exerted by US Secretary of State John Kerry to achieve tangible progress in the peace negotiations, currently under way, between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

His Majesty stressed the Kingdom’s continued support for these efforts in a manner that addresses all final status issues and leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state that lives in peace and security side by side with Israel, in accordance with the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The King reiterated that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with pre-1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital, is part of Jordan’s higher strategic interests.

Stressing that all parties concerned with achieving long-lasting peace between Palestine and Israel should strive to overcome any hurdles that may impede the peace negotiations, His Majesty warned that Israel’s unilateral measures in the holy city of Jerusalem will have a negative impact on the future of the peace process in its entirety.

Indyk expressed the US administration’s appreciation of the efforts led by the King to achieve peace, security and stability in the region, lauding Jordan’s continued move towards democratic reform.

His Majesty’s Office Director Imad Fakhouri and the accompanying US delegation attended the meeting.
