King to open 17th Parliament session

His Majesty King Abdullah will inaugurate the first ordinary session of the 17th Parliament on Sunday, delivering the Speech from the Throne, in which he will outline political guidelines for the coming stage.

His Majesty will address members of the Lower House and Senate, the Cabinet and key public figures from various walks of life.

Following the Speech from the Throne, MPs will hold internal elections to select their new leadership, including the House Speaker and members of the permanent office.

The King is expected to outline the country’s economic, political and social priorities for the next stage.

After His Majesty’s speech, the King will receive deputies, senators and members of the Cabinet.

Following their meeting with His Majesty, the recently appointed senators will be sworn in, before they hold their first meeting, presided over by Senate President Abdur-Rau’f S. Rawabdeh, to form a committee to draft their response to the Speech from the Throne, and form their permanent office.

Following the Senate meeting, the 148 MPs will meet in a separate session to elect the Speaker.
