His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday met US Middle East Envoy George Mitchell, who briefed the King on talks carried out during his current tour of the region.

During the meeting, King Abdullah called for an end to all unilateral Israeli measures, including settlement expansion and measures that seek to change the identity of Jerusalem and the holy places. He said such actions will jeopardise the opportunity at hand to achieve peace.

The meeting was attended by Royal Court Chief Nasser Lozi, King's Adviser Ayman Safadi, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Hale, Director for Near Eastern Affairs at the National Security Council Dan Shapiro and US Ambassador to Amman Robert Beecroft.

King Abdullah said the US has a leading role in the peace process, which, he said, should lead to the implementation of the two-state solution, to which Washington is committed.

He referred in this context to US President Barack Obama's speech at the UN General Assembly meeting in September, where the American president stressed the US commitment to achieving Middle East peace, in accordance with the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The King also called for supporting the Palestinian Authority and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in their pursuit to restore the rights of Palestinians.

He said that failure to achieve peace would have consequences for the region's security and stability.

Meanwhile, Mitchell stressed the US commitment to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace in the region by ending the conflict in accordance with the two-state formula.
