His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday met with US special envoy for Middle East George Mitchell to discuss efforts to launch serious and effective negotiations to bring about peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

At the meeting, King Abdullah emphasised the importance of embarking quickly on a clear course of action to end the conflict in the Middle East.

The King underlined the significance of the US role in ensuring fruitful negotiations that lead to a two-state solution, commending Mitchell's efforts in listening to the viewpoints of the different parties concerned with peace in the region and bringing them together.

King Abdullah said the establishment of an independent Palestinian state that fulfills the Palestinians' aspirations of liberty and self-determination is the basis for realising a just and comprehensive peace.

The King also reiterated that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the core regional issue, and its resolution is the key to facing other challenges in the region.

Mitchell briefed King Abdullah on the results of his recent tour of the region, which included Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Palestinian Authority and Israel.

He also commended the King's continued efforts over the years to support the peace process and enhance the region's security and stability.
