His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday held talks with U.S. Congressmen and leaders on recent developments in the Middle East and means to bolster bilateral ties.

“Realizing peace in the region is very essential to succeed in strengthening democracy and implementing reform programs,” King Abdullah said during the meeting, noting that achieving just, comprehensive and lasting peace has become much more possible now than before.

His Majesty said that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is a "man of peace and a brave leader who does not believe in violence”, stressing on the necessity to back the Palestinian leadership and help build its institutions and improve its economy.

Israel's plan to withdraw from Gaza, said His Majesty the King, should be part of the roadmap.

On Iraq, King Abdullah said Iraqi people should be supported to establish a strong and stable Iraq and build a better future for their country.

King Abdullah also outlined Jordan's efforts to achieve reform. Developing national economy and improving citizens' living standards are among the top priorities despite the difficult regional conditions.

The King highlighted the importance of US assistance in achieving that goal.

On their part, Congress leaders, including Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Foreign Aid Jim Kolbe and Senator Thad Cochran, who chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Bill Frist, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Chairman of the Senate Committee on External Affairs Richard Lugar, Henry Hyde and other prominent legislators, voiced appreciation for King Abdullah's efforts to build peace and realize prosperity in the region. They also commended Jordan's economic achievement including the country's efforts to improve investment climate.

During the meeting, Kolbe said all Congress committees are currently considering earmarking $200 million in additional aid to the Kingdom, in addition to the already approved $456 million for 2005.

On his part, Cochran stressed that the Congress will continue to support "pioneering initiatives" launched by Jordan.
