His Majesty King Abdullah said Sunday it is important that influential world powers exert more efforts to ensure that aid continues to countries hosting Syrian refugees, foremost of which is Jordan.

During a meeting at Al Husseiniya Palace with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi, attended by Her Majesty Queen Rania, King Abdullah said Syrian refugees account for 20 per cent of Jordan's population.

His Majesty reviewed the Kingdom's efforts to host the displaced Syrians, expressing his appreciation for the UNHCR in this endeavour to enable it to deal with the economic and developmental repercussions of the refugee crisis.

Jordan looks for further cooperation with the UNHCR to alleviate the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on host communities in the Kingdom, the King added.

Grandi, who is visiting as part of a regional tour, commended Jordan's tremendous efforts to hosting Syrian refugees and provide humanitarian and relief aid to them, reiterating the refugee agency's commitment to supporting the Kingdom's capacity in this field.

The meeting was attended by the chief of the Royal Hashemite Court, the deputy premier and minister of foreign and expatriate affairs and the director of the King's office.
