His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday called for the need to launch a coordinated Arab, European and US effort to achieve a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution.
At a meeting with European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, King Abdullah underscored the need for concerted international efforts to initiate serious negotiations to reach a sustainable Israeli-Palestinian peace based on the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative and international resolutions. He said that the parties should not wade into a new peace process.
King Abdullah also discussed with the European official the efforts exerted to consolidate the ceasefire in Gaza and means to guarantee the delivery of humanitarian and medical assistance to Gaza residents in the wake of Israeli aggression.
The King said that the international community must shoulder responsibility and address the root cause of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in order to avoid a recurrence of the aggression.
The King, who is set to meet with US Middle East envoy George Mitchell next Saturday, said the flow of humanitarian and medical assistance to the Gaza Strip must be sustained to ensure that humanitarian conditions do not deteriorate further.
Solana briefed His Majesty on the talks he held during his current tour of the region which includes Egypt, the Palestinian lands and Israel.
Wednesday's meeting was also attended by Chief of the Royal Hashemite Court Nasser Lozi, the King's Advisor Ayman Safadi and Foreign Minister Salah Bashir.
