King meets Iranian FM, GCC Secretary General

His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on bilateral ties and the latest regional developments.

The King said Jordan backs a diplomatic and peaceful solution to Tehran's atomic issue.

Resorting to force will lead to grave repercussions on the security and stability of the region, His Majesty said.

King Abdullah also called for a nuclear-free Middle East, adding that nuclear power must be regulated by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

On Iraq, the King underlined the necessity of supporting the political process there.

For his part, Mottaki reiterated that Iran wanted nuclear energy, "not nuclear weapons".

The Iranian official hailed King Abdullah's wise stands towards the crisis between Iran and the west.

He extended an invitation to King Abdullah II to visit Tehran.

Mottaki noted to the importance of dialogue between countries of the region to support Iraq's unity and build a better future for its citizens.

Talks also covered the situation in the Palestinian territories, where the Iranian official highly valued the Hashemite role in serving and supporting the Palestinian issue.

Meanwhile, His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday called for continued coordination with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, especially under the current circumstances that pose huge challenges for the region as a whole.

During a meeting with GCC Secretary General Abdul Rahman Ben Hamad Al Atiyyah, the King also focused on the Iranian nuclear issue, expressing hope the crisis would be settled through diplomatic and peaceful means.
