His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday met with several members of the British House of Commons in London, and warned that any delay in arriving at a political solution for the Syrian crisis will exacerbate the suffering of the Syrian people.
King Abdullah pointed out that it will also lead to a surge in the influx of Syrian refugees, reiterating the Kingdom’s position in support of a comprehensive political solution that ends the bloodshed and safeguards the unity of Syria’s people and lands.
Discussions also focused on Middle East peace efforts. The King said Jordan will work with all concerned regional and international parties to push for reviving peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians on the basis of the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative.
His Majesty underscored the role of both Britain and the European Union in support of efforts to reach a comprehensive and viable peace that guarantees the security and stability of the Middle East.
Commending parliamentary cooperation between Jordan and the UK, the King highlighted the need to expand this cooperation through expertise exchange.
With regard to domestic affairs, His Majesty stressed Jordan’s commitment to a roadmap to achieve comprehensive reform, pointing out that the Kingdom has taken important steps as part of its efforts to develop political life and boost participation in decision making.
In parallel, the Kingdom is working to achieve economic reform that can strengthen the national economy and boost the development process, the King noted.
The lawmakers lauded Jordan’s efforts to ensure regional security and stability and deal with regional challenges.
They also commended His Majesty’s leadership of the drive towards reform and the steps that Jordan has taken in this regard.
They stressed their commitment to develop bilateral cooperation and support Jordan to achieve its reform programmes and face economic challenges incurred as a result of hosting Syrian refugees.
