His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday held talks with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero concerning efforts to reach a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Discussions also covered means to boost cooperation between Jordan and Spain, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.

At his meeting with Zapatero, King Abdullah stressed the need for immediate action to resume negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis based on a clear action plan that proceeds according to a specific time frame and the relevant terms of reference. The process, he said, should lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state that lives in peace alongside Israel.

The King also stressed the centrality of the roles of the EU and the US in supporting efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East, noting that in spite of the obstacles, efforts need to be intensified to start serious and effective peace talks.

The King warned that the alternative is the continuation of tension and violence, highlighting its ramifications on the region and the world.

He also pointed out the role Spain has historically played in supporting peace efforts and enhancing Middle East stability and security.

Talks also covered means to foster bilateral ties in various fields, especially economic development and investment.

The King voiced appreciation for Spain's support of the Kingdom in implementing development projects in several vital sectors, saying the Kingdom is looking forward to receiving Spain's backing for its request for "Advanced Status" with the EU.

King Abdullah also referred to opportunities to boost cooperation and implement joint investment projects between the private sectors in both countries.

His Royal Highness Prince Ali was sworn in as Regent.
