His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday held talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on efforts to bring about peace between Palestinians and Israelis.
King Abdullah briefed the Palestinian president on the outcome of his visit to the United States last week and talks with US President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and US Congress committees.
Discussions dealt with Jordan's efforts to push the peace process forward through meetings recently held in Amman between Palestinians and Israelis to re-launch peace negotiations.
His Majesty affirmed to President Abbas that Jordan will do its utmost to create an appropriate climate for launching negotiations that address all final status issues, leading to the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The King and Abbas voiced their keenness on continuing coordination and consultations on issues of common interest.
The Palestinian president expressed appreciation for Jordan's efforts to kick-start peace talks as well as its support to the Palestinians in their quest to establish their independent state on their national soil.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Director of His Majesty’s Office Imad Fakhoury, His Majesty’s Advisor for Media Affairs and Communication Amjad Adaileh, PLO Executive Committee Member Saeb Erekat, Fatah Central Committee Member Mohammad Ishtiya, and Palestinian Ambassador to Jordan Atallah Khairi.
In a statement following the meeting, the Palestinian president said the meeting aimed at discussing the outcome of His Majesty's visit to the US.
Abbas highlighted the importance of His Majesty's role in bringing the Palestinians and Israelis together. He condemned Israeli practices in the occupied Palestinian territories, mainly settlement activities that constitute an obstacle to peace efforts.
