His Majesty King Abdullah on Saturday returned home from a brief visit to Egypt, during which he held talks with Egyptian interim President Adli Mansour on bilateral ties and the latest developments in the Middle East.
During the meeting, held at Al Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo, King Abdullah and Mansour agreed to boost efforts aimed at developing bilateral economic and political ties in order to serve the interests of both countries.
They called for convening the Jordanian-Egyptian Joint Higher Committee as soon as possible.
King Abdullah said he was committed to supporting the Egyptian people’s choices and helping the country overcome the challenges it is facing, stressing the need for Egyptian political forces to protect the national cohesion to preserve Egypt’s leading role in the region.
Discussions also covered Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations based on the two-state solution. His Majesty spoke about Jordan’s efforts to ensure the resumption of serious talks that address final status issues to reach the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The two sides underscored the importance of the “positive” step announced by US Secretary of State John Kerry regarding the launch of peace negotiations soon.
The King and Mansour also reviewed the latest developments in Syria. His Majesty stressed the need for a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis that would end the suffering of Syrians and ensure their unity.
His Majesty and Mansour voiced their commitment to continued coordination over Arab and regional challenges.
The meeting was attended on the Jordanian side by Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, His Majesty's Adviser Abdullah Wreikat, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Meshal Al Zabin, Director of the Intelligence Department Lt. Gen. Faisal Shoubaki and the Kingdom's ambassador to Egypt Bisher Khasawneh.
Top Egyptian officials also attended the talks, including Vice-President for Foreign Relations Mohamed El-Baradei, Prime Minister Hazem El-Biblawi, Armed Forces Chief Gen. Abdul Fattah Sisi, Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi, the country's intelligence chief and the president's adviser.
