His Majesty King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday discussed the latest developments in efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
They reiterated that a solution should be reached on the basis of a two-state formula that guarantees the establishment of an independent and viable state for Palestinians on their national soil within the context of a regional peace.
The two leaders also reviewed the results of proximity talks that started in May with the aim of finding suitable grounds for launching direct peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis in order to achieve the two-state solution as soon as possible.
King Abdullah and Abbas stressed the need for serious efforts to establish the right conditions to allow the start of direct negotiations according to the relevant terms of reference that guarantee the talks will result in a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.
They also agreed on the importance of continuing coordination and communication among all parties to push peace efforts forward.
The King stressed that Jordan will continue to hold talks with all concerned international and regional parties to overcome obstacles to the peace process and to create the right conditions for relaunching direct talks that address all final status issues and achieve a two-state solution.
The King and Abbas underlined the need for Israel to halt all unilateral measures that seek to change the facts on the ground, particularly settlement building, home demolitions and attempts to empty Jerusalem of its Arab inhabitants, both Muslim and Christian.
