His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday highlighted the importance of providing contemporary police services under the Public Security Department's (PSD) upcoming development strategy in order to ensure security for all citizens.

The King described the strategy as a “comprehensive action plan”, which would help in implementing the Kingdom's security policy through providing modern and complementary law enforcement services.

During a visit to PSD headquarters today, the King listened to a briefing on the department's development strategy. He stressed the need to provide maximum security while taking into account justice and equality.

The King also highlighted the importance of PSD programmes in developing correctional and rehabilitation centres across the Kingdom in order to ensure contemporary administrative methods that meet prisoner rehabilitation requirements.

Also on Sunday, King Abdullah cited the need to maintain necessary measures in order to reduce traffic accidents and protect citizens, stressing the need to apply the law to drivers who breach traffic laws and regulations.

During the visit, the King was briefed on the implementation of the PSD strategy, including steps taken by the department to develop correctional and rehabilitation centres and to enhance efforts in traffic policing, crime prevention and combating drugs.

The PSD informed the King that the number of traffic accidents dropped by 9 per cent in 2008 compared to last year, while the number of injuries and causalities resulting from traffic accidents declined by 22 per cent and 28 per cent respectively.

PSD Director Major General Mazen Qadi said the department will maintain efforts to realise the King's vision, provide optimum security services for citizens and will remain vigilant in protecting the country.
