His Majesty King Abdullah will participate in the second Nuclear Security Summit to be held in South Korea on March 26-27, along with several world leaders.
The King’s participation is in line with Jordan’s compliance and commitment to the requirements of nuclear security in its endeavour to utilise atomic energy to reduce its reliance on imports.
The King will meet with South Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak in Seoul and with members of various delegations attending the summit, which will address crucial global challenges and evaluate progress achieved since the 2010 Washington Nuclear Security Summit.
The Seoul summit aims at fostering global cooperation among nuclear entities and organisations, presenting a platform for dialogue on nuclear security and its relations with nuclear safety, which has become paramount, especially on the heels of the Fukushima nuclear crisis last year.
During the 2010 Washington summit, the King emphasised the need to boost international cooperation and institutionalise coordination among organisations concerned with nuclear security, including the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism.
