King discusses ties with IMF, World Bank chiefs

His Majesty King Abdullah met with World Bank (WB) President Robert Zoellick in Washington on Thursday and discussed means to further cooperation between Jordan and the WB to support the Kingdom’s development programmes.

During the meeting, the King expressed appreciation for the WB’s support to Jordan. Zoellick stressed that the international body will continue providing the Kingdom with assistance within the framework of the 2011-2014 partnership strategy.

Also on Thursday, the King met with Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

 “The meeting was an opportunity to discuss recent global, regional and domestic economic developments. [Lagarde] reiterated the IMF’s support for Jordan’s efforts to put in place homegrown policies that promote inclusive growth and higher employment,” an IMF statement said.

His Majesty also met with CEOs of major US companies interested in investing in Jordan, and briefed them on the investment opportunities in the Kingdom.

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Jafar Hassan said the economic aspect was at the forefront of the meetings that the King held in the US.

He noted that US officials voiced Washington’s full commitment to continue providing Jordan with financial assistance.
