His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday discussed with World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director General Pascal Lamy relations between Jordan and the WTO and means of further boosting them within the strategic partnership between the two sides.

At the meeting, which was attended by Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh and His Majesty’s Office Director Imad Fakhoury, the King stressed keenness to forge closer cooperation with the organisation to achieve common interests.

King Abdullah said Jordan's commitment to signed trade and free trade agreements reflects the Kingdom's policy, based on openness and a package of legislation to conform to world market requirements.

The King added that Jordan is interested in increasing Arab representation in the WTO, highlighting the need to give developing countries and small economies preferential treatment in negotiations to join the organisation to enable them to benefit from international trade revenues.

The WTO director hailed Jordan's legislative environment, mainly in the trade and investment fields as well as the Kingdom’s efforts to develop its industrial products.

Jordan joined the 159-member WTO in 2000.
