King, Czech President Hold Talks

His Majesty King Abdullah and Czech President Vaclav Klaus on Monday said there is great potential to boost cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of economy, renewable energy, transport and infrastructure.

The two leaders also voiced keenness to stimulate bilateral economic and commercial ties by signing agreements in the future to strengthen relations between Jordan and the Czech Republic and between the Kingdom and the European Union.

Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolلnek is currently the president of the European Council.

King Abdullah voiced satisfaction with the development of bilateral political relations, noting the two countries' agreement on several issues, but stressed the need to further economic and cultural ties and boost trade and investment cooperation.

Talks also covered the Middle East peace process where the two leaders underlined the urgent need to relaunch conclusive negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis on a two-state solution to the conflict between them.

In this regard, the King underlined the importance of the EU's role in supporting peace efforts in the Middle East.

Discussions were attended by Royal Court Chief Nasser Lozi, the King's Adviser Ayman Safadi, Foreign Minister Nasser Judah, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suheir Al Ali and Non-resident Ambassador to Prague Makram Qaisi.

Klaus, who stressed the Czech Republic's eagerness to bolster relations with Jordan, said the current global economic crisis requires Europe and the Arab world to work together to find suitable ways to stand up to it and find new markets.

Also Monday, King Abdullah met separately with Prime Minister Topolلnek and Czech Senate President Pfiemysl Sobotka to discuss means to foster relations in different areas, especially in the parliamentary, energy and tourism fields. Discussions also covered developments in the Middle East.

In an interview with the Czech newspaper Lidove Noviny, King Abdullah said Israel needs to make peace a strategic option, noting that there should be commitment in this regard.

On the sidelines of the King's visit, Jordan and the Czech Republic signed a cultural cooperation agreement and a protocol on investment promotion.
