His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday discussed with Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird ways to cement Jordanian-Canadian ties and the latest developments in the region, particularly in Syria.

King Abdullah underlined the need to boost cooperation between Jordan and Canada, particularly at the economic and investment levels.

His Majesty stressed the need for a comprehensive solution that would end the bloodshed in Syria and ensure the unity of its people.

The King highlighted the Kingdom’s efforts to host Syrian refugees and provide them with medical and humanitarian services.

The two sides also discussed efforts to revive the peace process to reach a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, based on a two-state solution with an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders living side-by-side with Israel.

Canada pledged $13 million in aid to help Jordan with “pressing humanitarian and security needs.”

Baird commended Jordan’s role in maintaining stability and peace in the region, and the Kingdom’s reform drive.

“Jordan has consistently demonstrated a leadership role in the pursuit of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, and it continues to lead in the face of the ongoing crisis in Syria,” a Canadian embassy statement quoted Baird as saying.

“Jordan’s generosity in hosting an influx of Syrian refugees is a model for all. Some 2,000 desperate Syrians arrive in Jordan daily. Accepting them is not without sacrifice or risk domestically. It is done in the finest tradition of promoting human dignity,” he noted.

The meeting was attended by Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.
