His Majesty King Abdullah called on Israel to stop attacks on Lebanon and condemned the attacks which have targeted Lebanese civilians and civilian infrastructure.
His call came during a meeting today Lebanese MP Saadedinne Hariri who arrived in Aqaba from Alexandria, Egypt. Hariri said in remarks to the press that he had come on a short visit to Jordan to "ask the king to use his good relations with world leaders to bring about an end to the attacks on the Lebanese people."
The King assured Hariri that his efforts and contacts with Arab countries and international powers to find a way out of the situation and to spare the Lebanese people more human and material losses. He stressed the importance of forming a unified Arab position that would empower the Lebanese government to assist the Lebanese people, highlighting the need for the Lebanese people to unite to overcome the circumstances now facing them.
Hariri assured the King that the Lebanese people reject the use of their country as a base from which to implement regional agendas that do not serve Lebanon's interests. Hariri said aggression will not serve Israel, adding that dialogue could open channels to resolve these issues. He described the blockade of Lebanon's sea and airspace as illegal and called on the Lebanese to unite against Israeli aggression. He said Lebanon would not become a playground for those who want to use the country for political purposes, saying that the Lebanese are a people who love peace and want to live freely.
Regarding his contacts to end the attacks, Hariri said he was speaking the American, British and French officials but had not spoken to the American President George Bush to reign in the Israeli attacks.
