His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday received Arab Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Jarwan and an accompanying delegation participating in the Arab Parliament Conference, which is being held in Amman this week.
During the meeting, King Abdullah underlined the role of the Arab Parliament in supporting development programmes and institutionalising democracy and dialogue to improve political life in the Arab world.
His Majesty also stressed the need to maintain cooperation and coordination among Arab parliaments, especially with regards to the transformations witnessed in the region.
The King stressed the importance of building on outcomes and recommendations of the Arab Parliament Conference to enhance joint Arab work and serve Arab causes and people.
Discussions at the meeting, attended by Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawneh, also covered the latest regional developments, especially the situation in Syria.
His Majesty reaffirmed Jordan’s stance which calls for a comprehensive political solution to the Syrian crisis that safeguards Syria’s territorial unity and ends the suffering of its people, reviewing the Kingdom’s efforts in dealing with the large number of Syrian refugees.
Talks also tackled Middle East peace efforts aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian national soil according to the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative.
For his part, Jarwan commended Jordan’s comprehensive reforms, its pivotal role in serving Arab causes and enhancing joint Arab work, and its humanitarian assistance to the Syrian refugees.
The Arab Parliament Conference, which opened in the capital on Sunday, is scheduled to conclude on Thursday under the Dome of Parliament.
Representatives of Arab parliaments, shura councils and the Arab Parliament’s committees are participating in the conference.
