His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday stressed the need for continuous and close coordination between Jordan and Palestine regarding all stages of the peace process, “in a way that safeguards Jordan’s national interests”.
King Abdullah made the remarks during talks in Amman, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
In press remarks following the meeting, Abbas said: “Jordan is a full partner in the peace process… It will be always updated on the negotiation process and will be consulted before and after about all related matters.”
During the meeting, His Majesty and Abbas reviewed the major developments in the recently restarted Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
The King reiterated Jordan’s support for any measures that will ultimately result in the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
His Majesty emphasised that the establishment of a viable and independent Palestinian state within the pre-1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and on the basis of the two-state solution, lies at the heart of Jordan’s national interests. The King also noted that the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative provides a historic chance to reach a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
Expressing appreciation for the US administration’s efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East, and especially those of US Secretary of State John Kerry, His Majesty warned against the continuation of Israel’s unilateral measures in Jerusalem and its unrelenting settlement expansion policy, noting that they pose significant threats to the progress of the peace talks.
The two leaders also discussed current regional developments, including the situation in Syria, stressing the need to come to a comprehensive solution to the crisis that ends the suffering of the brotherly Syrian people.
The meeting was attended by Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Minister Nasser Judeh, His Majesty’s Office Director Imad Fakhoury, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat and Palestinian Ambassador to Amman Attallah Khairi.
