His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday said all state institutions should confront rumours circulated by those with suspicious agendas that seek to harm Jordan's national unity and stability.

At a meeting at the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) Headquarters, the King said his message to all is "Enough, and all state institutions, the government, senators, MPs and the media should shoulder their responsibilities in confronting this disease" and deal firmly with those who cast doubts and aim to harm the country.

His Royal Highness Prince Feisal, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff General Khaled Sarayreh and other senior officers were present at the meeting.

King Abdullah said Jordan's commitment to the right of Palestinian refugees to return and compensation is constant and unchangeable, adding that no power can impose a position on Jordan that contradicts its interests.

The King said he had been following recent discussions of the refugee issue, which he stressed were unfortunate.

His Majesty emphasised: “Our position towards the refugee issue is unchangeable and our commitment to their right of return and compensation is constant and unquestionable.”

"I stress again and clearly that there is no power that can dictate to us anything that is against the interests of Jordan and Jordanians," said the King, adding that none of the successive US administrations has placed pressure on Jordan on the issue of refugees.

His Majesty said: "Those who claim there is a threat to Jordan, or to Jordanian identity, stability and national unity, do not know Jordan and Jordanians and have not read their history."

The King said Jordan is closest to the Palestinians and will continue to protect their rights and extend all possible support to establish an independent Palestinian state as soon as possible.

His Majesty cautioned against any attempt to harm national unity, stressing: “National unity is a red line and we will not allow anyone, whether from the inside or the outside, to harm this unity.”

King Abdullah added that unfortunately, the majority of those who try to harm unity are from inside the country, which he said is shameful and unfortunate.

The King also warned against the continued circulation of dangerous rumours. The King referred to rumours disseminated at the launch of the decentralisation project, saying that such baseless news sought to spread panic. He said that he warned at the time against spreading harmful rumours.

His Majesty said that there are some who seek to sabotage the future of Jordan, stressing that these persons would not be allowed to harm the country.

The King said rumours do not exist in the rural areas, the Badia or the refugee camps, but originate in political salons in Amman: “The true Jordanians I know do not listen to such rumours.”

The King said the situation in the Kingdom is going well in spite of regional challenges, emphasising that he will continue to work with the Arabs and other countries to overcome Jordan's economic challenges.

King Abdullah said Jordan's situation at the international level is very good and its ties with the Arab states are excellent, adding that they are trying to help the country.

Expressing optimism about the Kingdom's future, the King said there are no fears for the future of Jordan and urged all to exert their utmost efforts to best serve the country.

The King said he has pressed over the past decade for realising achievements as quickly as possible, adding that there has been slow implementation by some governments and former officials that should be addressed.

At the meeting, King Abdullah said he has called for evaluating the progress made in the past years with a view to improving the performance of the country. Such review, the King said, should be an ongoing process as Jordan pursues its national goals.

His Majesty said his confidence in the armed forces is high, referring to plans to provide them with the best equipment over the coming two years.

These plans also include enhancing the financial situation of officers and other JAF members in parallel with plans to improve the situation of all segments of society.

Also Tuesday, the King met with Sarayreh to discuss strategies and plans to develop the army and meet its demands, as well as to look into several issues of concern to the JAF.
