King attends ceremony on Hijri New Year

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday attended a ceremony held by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs at the King Abdullah I Mosque in Amman on the occasion of the Hijri New Year.

Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdul Salam Abbadi stressed in a speech the importance of this anniversary in the history of the Islamic nation. Hijri refers to the journey of Prophet Mohammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina, which paved the way for the establishment of the Islamic state.

The ceremony was attended by a number of royal family members, as well as by the prime minister, the speakers of the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament, the president of the Judicial Council, the Royal Court chief and other senior officials.

The grand Mufti of Jordan Sheikh Abdul Karim Khasawneh also made remarks in which he stressed the importance of this occasion for all Muslims.
