His Majesty King Abdullah II announced today the establishment and financing of a fund for the purpose of training and supporting journalists.

The fund's main objective is to develop the theoretical and practical knowledge of journalists in order to elevate the profession in the country.

During a meeting with the Jordan Press Association (JPA) President Abdel Wahab Zgheilat, King Abdullah reaffirmed support for press freedoms and expressed hope that freedom would be complemented by the development of the profession so that journalists can perform with efficiency, skill and professionalism.

The King also expressed support for JPA efforts to enable journalists to deal with the various political, economic and social issues without limiting their freedom, but also provide them with real training experience.

“We are supportive of any effort to enhance professional journalism, and I am confident of journalists' will and ability to elevate one of the noblest professions that deals with the truth and nothing but the truth.”

Zgheilat briefed King Abdullah on the JPA's plans to advance the profession.

The JPA, through its regulations and membership, is responsible for providing the necessary training for journalists, Zgheilat added.

He expressed gratitude for the King's support and said that the JPA, in coordination with media institutions, will draft a comprehensive plan and operating mechanisms for the fund as well as the needed training programs.

The JPA had issued a statement commending King Abdullah's continuous support for the journalism profession and his call for the media's participation in national decision-making through presenting objective and impartial facts to citizens.

Zgheilat reaffirmed the JPA's commitment to achieve its goals to enhance media performance and fortify the profession against manipulation.
