His Majesty King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday discussed efforts to ensure the success of the US-hosted international peace meeting to take place before the end of this year.
King Abdullah and Abbas reiterated that the gathering, proposed by US President George W. Bush, should address focal issues in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that could lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The two leaders also emphasized the importance of preparing well for the meeting, stressing the need to have a specific agenda for final status negotiations to ensure the success of the peace process and to discuss issues relating to Jerusalem, the borders and refugees.
The King renewed Jordan's support for the Palestinian leader and the country's keenness to rally Arab and international support for the Palestinian Authority to help it succeed in its negotiations with the Israelis.
The King and Abbas reviewed the outcome of a four-day visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to the region.
The Palestinian president briefed King Abdullah on his talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Abbas also voiced his appreciation for the Kingdom's role in supporting the Palestinians.
In press statements following the meeting, Abbas said he briefed King Abdullah on his visit to Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, which might be invited to attend the upcoming meeting.
