His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday underlined the need for “swift, effective and practical” steps to modernise the Kingdom's judiciary.

He said judicial reforms remain a top priority that require the provision of all necessary means to develop the judiciary in a way that ensures an effective and fair litigation process that responds to human rights requirements in line with international standards.

King Abdullah made the remarks as Rateb Wazani took the oath of office as the new president of the Cassation Court, replacing Ismail Omari. A Royal Decree was issued Tuesday referring Omari to retirement upon his request and appointing Wazani as of 13 October.

During the swearing-in ceremony, King Abdullah expressed his desire to improve the judicial independence and ensure a legal environment that enhances the sovereignty and impartiality of law.

King Abdullah has encouraged the formulation of a judicial reform plan that would support Jordan's development as a country ruled by institutions where justice, equality, transparency and the rule of law prevail.
