Jordan on Sunday renewed support for national dialogue and reconciliation process under way in Lebanon and the Doha accords that paved the way for the dialogue involving political forces in the country.
During talks with visiting Lebanese President Michel Sleiman at the Raghadan Palace, His Majesty King Abdullah underlined Jordan's support for Lebanon and the Kingdom's willingness to cooperate with its constitutional institutions and extend all possible support.
Highlighting Lebanon's significant role in the region's history and culture, King Abdullah emphasised the importance of unifying all efforts to face the dangers that threaten Lebanon's security, sovereignty and stability.
During the talks, the two leaders underlined the need to fully implement Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for an end to hostilities between Hizbollah and Israel. It also calls for a permanent ceasefire, based on the creation of a buffer zone free of armed personnel other than UN and Lebanese troops.
On bilateral ties, the two leaders emphasised their keenness to bolster relations and boost cooperation in different fields.
They discussed new prospects for economic and commercial cooperation, especially in the fields of energy, tourism and agriculture and agreed to activate the Joint Jordanian-Lebanese Higher Committee, saying meetings should be held as soon as possible.
Trade volume between the two countries is growing. The Kingdom's exports to Lebanon during the first half of this year stood at $71 million, while its imports amounted to $50 million.
Total volume of Lebanese investment in Jordan stands at JD195 million, shared among 32 projects in tourism, industry, health and agriculture sectors.
In their discussions, King Abdullah and Sleiman urged active Arab cooperation and a unified pan-Arab stand in the face of challenges and dangers threatening the nation.
King Abdullah and Sleiman also reviewed regional developments, especially those concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict. They emphasised the need to reach a just and comprehensive solution to the conflict in accordance with international resolutions and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The two leaders also underlined the need to solve the issue of the refugees on the basis of relevant international resolutions.
They also called for a national Palestinian reconciliation and an end to the Palestinian internal divide.
King Abdullah and Sleiman also called for lifting the siege imposed on Gaza Strip to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians as a result of the Israeli policies.
Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania held a dinner banquet in honour of Sleiman and First Lady Wafaa, attended by Royal family members and the Lebanese delegates accompanying the president.
Also on Sunday, the Lebanese president met separately with Senate President Zeid Rifai and Lower House Speaker Abdul Hadi Majali.
In a statement to the press following the meeting, Rifai said discussions dealt with the overall conditions in the region and means to develop bilateral relations.
