The Hashemites
Restoration of Islamic shrines in Jordan
The Hashemite initiative to restore the shrines of Prophet Muhammad’s companions and Prophets in Jordan commenced under the reign of King Hussein bin Talal. In 1984, a dedicated Royal committee was established to oversee the restoration and preservation of these sites, as well as the construction of mosques upon their grounds.
Under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, the Hashemite endeavour to restore shrines witnessed significant expansion, encompassing all regions of the Kingdom. From 1999 to 2023, 29 projects were undertaken, entailing the construction of shrines and mosques dedicated to prophets, companions, and other Islamic religious figures. Among these projects is the completion of the shrines of the Prophet’s companions in the Southern Mazar District of Karak Governorate (second phase), which honoured Zaid bin Haritha, Jaafar bin Abi Talib, and Abdullah bin Rawahah, distinguished leaders who were martyred in the historic Battle of Mutah. The reconstruction efforts also covered the mosques and shrines dedicated to Prophet Shuaib in Wadi Shuaib, Prophet Joshua bin Nun in Salt, Prophet Aaron in Wadi Musa, and Prophet Hud in Jerash.
The scope of the reconstruction efforts also extended to mosques and shrines of several companions of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, such as:
- Abu Ubaida Amer bin Al Jarrah in the Central Jordan Valley.
- Dirar bin Al Azwar in the Central Jordan Valley.
- Sharhabeel bin Hasna in the Northern Jordan Valley.
- Amer bin Abi Waqqas in the Northern Jordan Valley.
- Moath bin Jabal in Northern Shuna in the Jordan Valley.
- Al Harith bin Omair Al Azdi in Tafileh Governorate.
- Abu Dhar Al Ghafari in Madaba.
- Bilal bin Rabah in Wadi Al Seer in Amman.
- Abdul Rahman bin Awf in Jubeiha in Amman.
The development efforts extended to significant historical sites, including the site of the People of the Cave in Al Raqim/Al Rajaib, south of Amman, and the site of the blessed tree under which the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, sought shade during his trade journey to the Levant, located in Safawi area in the east of Jordan.
