His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday held talks here with Greek President Karolos Papoulias on bilateral ties as well as international and regional issues.

King Abdullah told the press after the meeting that he and Papoulias discussed ways to bolster cooperation and exchanged ideas over how to achieve just solutions to Middle East issues.

“Only a viable, democratic and territorially continuous Palestinian state can ensure a genuine, lasting and just peace in the Middle East,” the King said.

King Abdullah and Papoulias also reaffirmed a firm commitment to support the Iraqi people as they work for a united, democratic and prosperous future.

The King told reporters that he also briefed Papoulias on the Amman Message, which stresses Islam's rejection of all forms of violence, terrorism and extremism.

On the bilateral ties, Greece and Jordan on Wednesday signed agreements to bolster tourism exchange, and promote and protect investment.

“We are very much pleased with the agreements signed here today,” said King Abdullah, adding that the private sector in both countries must be encouraged to be more active in implementing these agreements.

Commending the King's peace efforts and endeavours to promote the true image of Islam, the Greek president said Jordan earned itself a special status in the international community.

Accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania, King Abdullah arrived in Greece on a two-day official visit, during which he is also expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, Greek industrialists and Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyannis.

Also today, King Abdullah delivered a speech, in which he said the agreements between Jordan and Greece would bring the two countries “even closer in the years ahead.”

He also received the Golden Medal of Athens after the Greek capital and Amman signed an agreement of cooperation.

“To me, it is a symbol of all that your historic city has given our world: The ideals of good governance, the growth of knowledge, partnership with others and of the whole immeasurable legacy that Greece has given, and continues to give, to the world,” King Abdullah said.
