King Holds Talks with Acting Singaporean President

His Majesty king Abdullah II discussed with Acting Singaporean President and Speaker of the parliament Abdullah Tarmugi and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the current developments in the region, particularly those related to elections in Palestine and Iraq and ties of cooperation between Jordan and Singapore.

His Majesty reiterated his call to the Palestinians to benefit from the current situation to be involved again in the peace process, genuinely take part in the upcoming elections and look forward to the future to establish their viable independent state.

The King also called on all Iraqis to participate in the elections and preserve Iraq's Arabism and loyalty to its Arab
nation. "Guaranteeing comprehensive and just elections in Palestine and Iraq forms a new stage to enhance peace and stability in the region and the world, in addition to it being an important step to achieve aspirations of the Palestinian and Iraqi peoples in democracy, pluralism and dignified life," the King added.

King Abdullah affirmed that the "Amman Message" which was launched recently forms an initiative to renew the moderate voice of Islam and make the silent majority speak of genuine Islam and present its bright image in the whole world.

In this context, His Majesty called on the media to actively contribute to building the bridges of understanding and dialogue among peoples and be far from spreading violence and wrong practices.

On the economic issue, King Abdullah affirmed keenness to promote relations with Singapore, most notably in the economic field.

The talks were attended on the Jordanian side by Prime Minister Faisal Fayez, Hashemite Royal Court Samir Rifai, the King's Advisor Akel Beltaji, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Hani Mulki, Planning and International Cooperation Minister Dr. Bassem Awadallah and the Jordanian Charge D'affaires in Singapore, Dr. Maher Tarawneh.

His Majesty stressed the importance for the private sector to benefit from the investment and free trade agreements between the two countries.

The acting Singaporean president for his part expressed appreciation of the role being played by Jordan under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II to present the genuine image of the situation in the Middle East region." The Amman Message contributes to understanding the message of true Islam, which focuses on Moderation and the rejection of violence and extremism.

The acting Singaporean president and prime minister expressed their country's full readiness to support Jordan in the economic, investment and technical fields. They also voiced support to all initiatives designed to enhance ties of cooperation with Jordan and Middle East peoples.

The meeting was attended on the Singaporean side by the ministers of internal affairs, foreign affairs, media, telecommunication, arts, environment and the Singaporean ambassador to Jordan.

In a statement to Jordan News Agency, Planning and International Cooperation Minister Bassem Awadallah said that His Majesty's talks with Singaporean officials had focused in the economic terms, on mechanisms of benefiting from the FTA between the two countries. "Talks also covered horizons of technical cooperation between the two countries in the fields of information technology, administrative development, scientific research and development at Jordanian universities.

The minister affirmed that the council, which was established during the visit of the Singaporean prime minister to Jordan 8 months ago, will meet in Amman during April of next year on the level of Arab and Asian businessmen.
