King discusses cooperation, region with foreign officials

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday met with several foreign and Arab officials to examine means to foster political and economic cooperation.

During a meeting with Middle East Quartet representative Tony Blair, the King discussed efforts to achieve Middle East peace as well as the latest regional developments. King Abdullah urged the international community to assist the Palestinians and the Israelis to reach a viable and just solution to the Palestinian issue, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the basis of the 1967 borders.

During a meeting with Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al Arabi, the King stressed the important role of the League in coordinating the positions of member states to deal with challenges in the Arab arena. The King underlined Jordan's support for all efforts to boost pan-Arab cooperation.

The King also met with former secretary general of the Arab League Amr Musa.

Also Sunday on the sidelines of the forum, King Abdullah met with Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government Barham Salih and highlighted the "strong" relationship between Jordan and Iraq.

The King also met with several economic figures and directors of institutions and companies taking part in the forum, with whom he discussed the possibility of boosting their investments in Jordan. These included Sir Nigel Knowles, CEO and managing partner of legal service provider DLA Piper, and Suleiman Al Harbi, chairman of the Northern Region Cement Company.

His Majesty also met with the US delegation participating in the forum, including political and economic figures as well as CEOs of several major American companies and entities. King Abdullah thanked the American people for their assistance to Jordan and urged US businessmen to increase their investments in the Kingdom and build on the agreements signed between the two countries, foremost of which is the Jordan-US Free Trade Agreement.

During his meeting with US Senator John McCain, who took part in the WEF, the King reviewed the latest developments in the Middle East. Highlighting efforts to bring about peace in the region, King Abdullah said the US must continue to play an effective role in backing the peace process and resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution. US Ambassador Stuart E. Jones stressed the US private sector’s desire to boost its cooperation with Jordanian counterparts and help the Jordanian government address unemployment by increasing investments and supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises.
