His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday checked on the conditions of Balqa residents and progress in the implementation of development projects in the governorate.

Thousands of men, women and children, carrying the national flag, lined up on both sides of the roads leading to the governorate to welcome His Majesty.

At a meeting with community representatives in the Salt Sports City, the King was briefed on the residents' needs, which included additional job opportunities and promoting religious and tourist sites in the governorate to help boost its economy.

They also asked for development plans to maximise benefits reaped from agricultural projects.

During the visit, King Abdullah gave instructions for the speedy implementation of several service and tourism projects currently under way.

Balqa Governor Sameh Majali and parliamentarians from the governorate thanked King Abdullah for his support.

Senator Mai Abul Samen said the King's visit reflected his concern about all Jordanians and his desire to keep in touch with them and learn about their conditions firsthand.

On his way to the governorate, King Abdullah met with community leaders from Fuheis, Mahes, Deir Alla, Ein Al Basha, Southern Shouneh and Qasabat Al Salt, who expressed their allegiance and keenness to serve the country.

Salt, the governorate's principal city, is an ancient agricultural town and administrative centre. Situated in the Balqa highland, about 790-840 metres above sea level, the town is built in the crook of three hills, close to the Jordan River Valley.
