...monotheistic heritage of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Each honour a deeply familiar principle. Indeed, everyone here, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, will recognise it in the words of the Prophet Mohammad, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: "By Him in whose Hand is my life, none of you believes until he or she loves for their brother, what they love for themselves." This is the Golden Rule of our responsibility for others.

There is no clash of civilisations. But we have received a grave warning. And we know, too, that there are those among us who seek to deepen the fault lines. They would capitalise on our lack of understanding about each other, to set off an earthquake of anger, resentment and fear. This applies not only between East and West, but within Eastern and Western cultures…

The greatest enemies of Islam are those who distort the teachings bestowed upon us by God and His Messenger... It is time for us to stand together, to reaffirm what the greatest scholars of our tradition have said: no Muslim can call another Muslim a non-believer. Whichever of the eight great schools of jurisprudence you follow — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii, Hanbali, Jafari, Zaydi, Ibadi or Thahiri — you are a Muslim. Your life, honour and property cannot be violated…

As a start, let us confess that we, Muslims, have not always fulfilled our obligations towards our religion and towards ourselves. Some Muslims or those who promulgate 'Islamic' slogans have defamed Islam and Muslims, and harmed Muslims, intentionally or unintentionally…

Divisions between the children of the umma, acts of violence and terrorism practiced by some groups and organisations, what is going on in Iraq, Pakistan and other Muslim countries in the form of accusations of apostasy and the killing of Muslims in the name of Islam, do not correspond to the principles and spirit of Islam, and Islam disavows them. Such practices generate turmoil and corruption on earth, because they give justification to non-Muslims to judge Islam according to acts that Islam disavows, and subsequently interfere in Muslims' affairs…
