King Abdullah and President Chirac Open Talks
Amman, 26 July 2002

His Majesty King Abdullah and French President Jacques Chirac on Friday stressed the need for an immediate move to address the perilous situation in the Palestinian areas and to take practical measures to end the Israeli occupation and establish the independent Palestinian state.

During their meeting at the Elysee attended by His Royal Highness Prince Hashem Bin Al Hussein, Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher and the Jordanian Ambassador to France Dina Kawaar, His Majesty King Abdullah pointed to the tragic situation of the Palestinian people suffering from the continuous Israeli escalation and urged France and the international community to tackle this situation.

The King said the Palestinian suffering is further aggravated after reported worsening living conditions, malnutrition and the lack of food and vaccine particularly for children.

President Chirac confirmed King Abdullah's views calling for drawing up a clear and practical and well-defined plan to end Israeli occupation and establish the Palestinian state under the UN resolutions 242 and 338 and the Arab peace plan within a three-year period.

King Abdullah said the parties involved in the conflict should commit themselves to the future steps of negotiations to ensure their success within a limited time frame.
