King lauds performance of Constitutional Court
Amman, 19 May 2013
His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday stressed the importance of the Constitutional Court as a key institution in the country’s drive towards reform.
During a meeting with court members at its new headquarters, King Abdullah highlighted its role in safeguarding the Constitution and guaranteeing justice, integrity and neutrality.
His Majesty emphasised the court’s role in reinforcing respect for the rule of the law, which in turn strengthens institutions and safeguards citizens’ rights and freedoms.
The King commended the court’s independence and complete transparency, calling on other institutions to follow its lead in this regard, and stressed that all authorities should cooperate with the court.
The court’s president, Taher Hikmat, said the institution, a long-time demand of the opposition and pundits, is a key milestone on the Kingdom’s path to democracy. Established in 2011 as part of constitutional amendments, the court is an important tool to reinforce respect for the Constitution and boost separation between the three branches of government, Hikmat added.
Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh and His Majesty’s Office Director Imad Fakhoury accompanied His Majesty during the visit.
