King calls for UN contingency plan for Syrian refugees

His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday met with UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos, who is on a visit to the Kingdom as part of a regional tour to check on the conditions of Syrian refugees.
King Abdullah outlined the relief services provided to Syrian refugees in Jordan, whose number has exceeded 240,000, stressing the need for the UN to have a contingency plan for dealing with the issue of refugees in case the situation in Syria further deteriorates.
His Majesty voiced appreciation for the efforts exerted by the UN through its leadership and various organisations to provide assistance to refugees and for assisting Jordan in providing them with relief services due to the additional burden they place on the country’s resources and potential.
The King highlighted the importance of coordination between UN organisations and various concerned institutions to provide better humanitarian and relief services for those in need around the world.
Amos briefed the His Majesty on the current missions of the UN relief organisations, commending the level of cooperation and coordination between Jordan and these agencies.
She said the UN will continue to support Jordan as the key host of Syrian refugees.
The King and Amos also discussed means to enhance cooperation between Jordan and the UN.
The meeting was attended by His Majesty’s Office Director Imad Fakhoury.
