The new ICT strategy adopted by industry leaders in 2007 aims to build on these impressive achievements. Its goals include:
- 50 per cent Internet usage by 2012.
- $3 billion in revenue for the ICT sector.
- 35,000 new jobs.
- Increase in ICT-sector R&D spending to 1 per cent of GDP.
Public and private sector changes will encourage this process, including opening up the ICT infrastructure to new competition, easing hurdles to starting and closing businesses, and incentivising introduction of new technologies. A secondary goal will be increasing industry representation in educational bodies and university boards, to help businesses and universities partner in producing more IT-ready graduates.
